What did the Iroquois homes look like?
The Iroquois lived in longhouses. These were long rectangular buildings made with wood frames and covered with bark. They were sometimes over 100 feet long. A village would have several longhouses which would often be surrounded by a fence called a palisade.

During the winter, the longhouse was central to Iroquoian community life. It was where people assembled to tell stories, conduct sacred ceremonies and socialize. There were fewer people around the longhouse during the summer because villagers were away tending to their crops.
