What is a drain primer?
Trap primers are used in plumbing systems to prevent floor drain traps from losing their water seal by evaporation. Maintaining the water seal will prevent the backflow of sewer gas into the buildings or rooms where the traps are installed.
How do you seal a basement drain?
To seal the drain, you can simply cap it off with a plumbing cap or fill the pipe with mortar or something similar. It is important to keep in mind when sealing any drainage in your home, that you or someone else in the future may want to regain access to that drain.
How does a floor drain trap primer work?
A trap primer connects to a cold water inlet or other water supply. Every time that inlet or supply is used, a small amount of water flows down to the trap to keep the water seal from drying up. If the primer is electronic, it is set on a timer that daily releases enough water to maintain the trap seal.
